Get to Know Perrysburg, Ohio | Community of the Month

The communities that make up the Toledo area have differing personalities, layouts, character qualities, sizes, and even zip codes. So if you say you live in Toledo, that could mean a wide number of things, as far as your neighborhood’s makeup is concerned. So instead of always clumping said communities together and making blanket statements about the Toledo area, we thought we would dig a bit deeper to unveil some interesting things (and hidden gems) about each neighborhood. From historical facts to current happenings, there are so many things worth highlighting in each community. Without further adieu... We’re excited to announce a new series in which we will examine a different community in the area each month, deeming it the Community of the Month! And first up is Perrysburg, Ohio — a well-loved Toledo suburb with lots of history in its past and plenty to do in the present.

One of the most notable things about Perrysburg is that it is one of two towns in the U.S. to be planned and mapped out by the federal government. What’s the other “town,” you ask? You may have heard of a little place called Washington, D.C., the other meticulously planned city. You can tell this is the case for Perrysburg when you encounter four streets by the name of North Boundary, South Boundary, East Boundary and West Boundary. The careful construction of this city’s layout has made it organized, functional and downright beautiful. It does in fact border the southern shore of the Maumee River!

Because of its proximity to the heart of Toledo, Perrysburg provides a small-town feel with all the amenities of a larger city. If you’re lucky enough to claim Perrysburg as your hometown, you — or your parents — have chosen wisely. In 2009, Ohio Magazine rated Perrysburg “Ohio’s Best Hometown.” We certainly agree! It’s easy to find the perfect home in Perrysburg because of the myriad of gorgeous historic homes in the area. And once you’re all moved in, you’ll be happy to discover lots to do in the downtown area. Grab a burger at Perry’s Burgers, a gyro at Zingo’s Mediterranean or pasta at Stella’s Restaurant and Bar. Roam the well-kept streets after your meal, popping in and out of shops and enjoying the beautiful hanging baskets dangling from light poles. And make sure you don’t leave without a cup of coffee from The Flying Joe! Check out their menu in advance and stop by for their Two Dollar Tuesdays or Flying Joe Friday (details can be found here).

Levis Commons is a popular shopping destination for Perrysburg residents and visitors. It is an open-air lifestyle center that includes housing, retail stores, office spaces, a movie theater, restaurants and even a hotel! This is the one-stop-shop to experience it all. Okay, this has all been so fun and all, but let’s be honest — parents are mostly concerned about the educational system when looking to buy in the area. Thankfully, Perrysburg has that covered — or mastered, really. For the 2014-15 school year, The Ohio Department of Education rated The Perrysburg School System “Excellent with Distinction” (the highest rating possible) for the 12th year in a row. The district was also granted all As and Bs under the ODE’s rigorous State Report Card.

Alongside education, it’s also important to get outside and enjoy the outdoor recreational opportunities of a town, whether it’s your hometown or you’re simply visiting. Perrysburg hosts 11 city parks that provide over 189 acres of green space within the city limits. You can narrow your park pursuit list down by finding a Perrysburg park in line with your desired amenities. Or simply scan the individual park pages to get more details about each one. Might we point you in the direction of the 18-hole disc golf course at Woodlands Park? Perrysburg’s slogan is “Embracing the past. Poised for the future.” You can certainly see this community live out this mantra by building upon its history, fostering a positive environment in the present, and looking forward to its bright future.
